Serious Quality is what makes a good bar

Posted on August 6, 2009 in Ronnie's News

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what makes Ronnie’s a really good bar. I believe it appeals to people who appreciate quality. Whether that’s music, premium beers, wines, spirits and cocktails or the freshly prepared superb food or the trained bar and table staff. Consequently it attracts quality people. But that’s all my opinion.

I really want to hear from our guests (you see you’re guests not customers at Ronnie’s, we like you). What do you like, what could we improve? It’s important to me to understand what we can do better. I’ve always believed it’s your place and we just run it for you, so please let me know your thoughts. There are comments cards at the bar or you can simply email me, , I’d love to hear from you. Oh and don’t say cheaper drinks. We don’t do cheap drinks. I just don’t have a wicked side. We only do quality drinks and invest in quality entertainment. If you want cheap and nasty drinks don’t come to Ronnie’s.

Some of the stuff that has been filtering back to me is the appreciation of quality music that we play at the bar. I believe we have the best roster of DJs. I love the music they play. They read crowds so well and play the right tunes at the right times creating a fantastic atmosphere. And believe me this is a skill that should never be under appreciated. We also showcase live music on Sundays and now also on Wednesdays.

There are some great musicians and bands in Macc and nearly all of them perform regularly at Ronnie’s. We even attract bands from further afield because we are developing a reputation as a great live music venue. Many acts will come down to our Open Mic sessions on a Tuesday, play a few numbers and then ask for a gig. Rough Twist is one such act that has done this. They really are quality and they use Open Mic regularly to showcase themselves and create excitement and anticipation for their gigs which they play all over town. They will be gigging again at Ronnie’s sometime soon, I’ll keep you posted.

One thing I have to let you know now though is that the Virginmarys are to become our resident band. They will play fortnightly at the bar (starting next Wednesday, that’s the 12th August). Their next gig will be our 2nd birthday party on Sunday 6th September, then every other Wednesday after that. Sometimes they’ll be on their own, sometimes they will be supported by bands they invite along. It really is an exciting development for us and for the band. It is after all, I believe, only a matter of time before they make it big.

Another act that you will see soon at Ronnie’s is Andrew Allen. Andrew is a Canadian singer/songwriter who is playing a number of gigs in the UK in September. We have the honour of hosting him on Wednesday 9th September and he is quite outstanding. You can check him out on Myspace or you can buy his stuff at itunes. He is well worth it.

This Sunday we have Dead River Disco performing in the courtyard. They played here a few weeks back and are back with us by popular demand. Brilliant stuff so don’t miss it. There’s also our fantastic gourmet bbq on offer as well which is unbelievable value at £5. We know how to make Sundays special.

One final thing. We are now stocking Fentiman’s Ginger Beer. Try it in a Moscow Mule. A freshly made Mule using premium vodka knocks the pre-packaged bottled shite that other bars serve into oblivion. A Moscow Mule at Ronnie’s is made like this:

2 shots of Smirnoff Black Vodka, ½ shot of freshly squeezed lime juice, ¼ shot of gomme syrup & 3 dashes of Angostura bitters shaken over ice then strained into an ice filled Collins glass. The drink is then topped up with Fentiman’s Ginger Beer and garnished with a lime wedge and a sprig of mint . Here’s one I drank last night:

Appreciating quality as always.
